How often should a child go to the opticians?

Spotting problems early helps your child’s development as they won’t be held back by their eyesight. At Spurrett Optometry, we have expert staff on hand to carry out detailed checks. We also supply a range of the best children’s glasses in Kendal.

Doctors will do standard eye tests on your new born to check for any major issues, but as they age things can quickly change. When it comes to infants, generally you don’t need to arrange an eye test unless unless there is an issue. If you do spot anything, you can talk this over with a professional to see if it needs checking.

Testing as your child grows up

A full eye check looks in detail at everything, and can look for any eyesight issues, even small ones. Even if you have no concerns, this still needs carrying out as children grow up. The first one should be at around 3 years old; this will give you peace of mind. When your child gets to school age, 4 or 5 years old, their eyes need checking again. This helps to prepare them for school, ensuring they have the best chance to succeed.

Up until the age of 16, children should have annual eye checks as they develop. These check for any issues that may not have been noticed. Also, if your child has glasses this allows us to adjust them for comfort as they age.

If you have any concerns or you think there’s even a possibility of an issue, you need to make an appointment. Even if your child is not due another eye test for some time, an issue may have developed. There’s no point in waiting, after all you can make their life easier by ensuring there sight is the best it can be.
